Hurricane season puts extra stress on island electrical systems — salt air, wind-driven rain, and power surges can expose weak panels and outdoor wiring fast.
Before the season
- Inspect the panel cover — rust, gaps, or loose knockouts let moisture in
- Test GFCI outlets in kitchens, baths, and outdoor areas
- Trim branches near the service entrance and overhead lines (with utility clearance rules in mind)
- Photograph your panel label — amperage and breaker map help after storm damage
Surge and backup planning
Whole-home surge protection reduces damage when grid power returns after an outage. If you rely on a generator, make sure transfer equipment is permitted and installed by a licensed electrician — backfeeding is dangerous and illegal.
After a storm
If you see water inside the panel, smell burning, or have breakers that will not reset, shut off the main and call a licensed electrician. Do not energize flooded equipment.
